What to Avoid After Ceramic Coating
The first week after ceramic coating is the most important stretch of the coating's life. The product is still curing cross-linking at a chemical level and hardening into the protective layer it will be for the next several years. What you do and do not do during this window has a real effect on how well the coating bonds and how long it performs.
The First 24–48 Hours: Keep It Dry
Do not get the car wet for at least 24 hours after application, and 48 hours is better if the weather allows it. Water hitting the surface during the early cure phase can disrupt the coating chemistry and leave water spots that become permanent marks in the finish.
That means no rain, no morning dew, no car wash, and no hosing down the wheels. If rain is in the forecast, park the car indoors or under a covered area.
The First 7 Days: Full Cure Period
Even after the initial 24–48 hours, the coating continues curing at a deeper level for the rest of the first week. During this period, avoid:
Automatic car washes. Even a touchless wash during the cure period can introduce water pressure and chemicals before the coating is fully hardened. Wait until after the 7-day mark.
Bird droppings and tree sap. Normally you would remove these quickly to protect the coating. During the cure period, the surface is more vulnerable than it will be once fully hardened. Park away from trees and areas with heavy bird activity for the first week.
Harsh chemicals and cleaning products. No detergents, degreasers, or anything with an extreme pH. If something gets on the car during this period and needs to come off, use a clean microfiber cloth with distilled water and as little pressure as possible.
Parking in direct sun immediately after application. UV exposure during initial cure is less of a concern than water, but giving the coating a few hours to set in a shaded area before moving the car into full sun is good practice.
What Happens If You Skip These Steps
The coating will not fall off completely, but you may notice uneven hydrophobic performance some spots where water beads perfectly and others where it does not. You may also see high spots or haze in the finish where water disrupted the cure. These are hard to fix without professional correction and in some cases partial reapplication.
It is easier to just park the car inside for a few days.
Long-Term Habits to Keep
After the first week, the coating is fully cured and durable. The ongoing rules are simpler: no brush car washes, pH-neutral soap only, and get bird droppings off quickly. Apply an SiO2 booster spray every 3–4 months and book an annual maintenance wash. That is genuinely all it takes to get the full rated life out of a professional coating.
