How Much Does a Full Car Detail Cost?
A full car detail in San Diego costs $149–$389 for most vehicles. That price gets you a complete service interior and exterior done by a professional at your home or office. It is not a car wash with some extras. It is several hours of hands-on work covering every surface of the vehicle.
What "Full Detail" Actually Means
A genuine full detail has two sides to it.
Exterior: Hand wash, wheel and tire cleaning, paint decontamination (iron fallout and tar removal), clay bar if needed, hand dry, glass cleaning, and a finishing wax or spray sealant. The goal is clean paint that is free of bonded contamination, not just rinsed-off surface dirt.
Interior: Full vacuum including seats, carpets, floor mats, door pockets, and trunk. Steam cleaning on vents, trim, and hard surfaces. Carpet and seat shampooing. Leather conditioning on leather seats. Dashboard, door panels, and console dressed and protected. Interior glass cleaned. The cabin should smell clean and look like it was just bought.
A good full detail takes 3–6 hours depending on the size and condition of the vehicle. If a shop quotes you a "full detail" that takes 45 minutes, it is not a full detail.
What Moves the Price
Vehicle size is the main variable. A compact sedan is at the low end of the $200–$350 range. A full-size SUV, pickup truck, or minivan is closer to the top end and sometimes above it, simply because there is more surface area to cover on the exterior and more interior space to clean properly.
Condition moves the interior price more than anything else. A car with moderate use and no major issues falls within the standard range. Heavy pet hair, deep staining in the carpet or seats, food and drink spills that have had time to set, or strong odors all require extra time and in some cases add-on treatments that carry their own cost.
Add-ons are separate from the base detail price. Paint correction, ceramic coating, ozone odor treatment, engine bay cleaning, and headlight restoration are all quoted on top of the base service.
How It Compares to a Drive-Through Wash
A full detail costs more than a drive-through wash because the results and the longevity of those results are not comparable. A drive-through wash cleans surface dirt. A full detail removes bonded contamination from the paint, conditions the interior materials to slow wear, and leaves protection behind. On a vehicle you plan to keep or sell, the difference in how the car looks and feels afterward is obvious.
For resale in particular, a professional full detail before listing can return more than it costs in perceived value and sale price.
